• Small haulage firms are almost as efficient as big operators but both are suffering from lack of cash to invest, according to financial analyst Plimsoll Publishing.
Its study of 2,847 hauliers and freight forwarders shows that the smallest 25% of firms made £ 3 net profit for every £100 worth of sales; the top 25% made £4.
As a result hauliers are left with insufficient funds for investment.
