We were surprised to learn that Volvo had actually marketed the FMio tractive unit in the UK, as we hadn't noticed any on the road. With Volvo shipping about half of the T20 models brought into this country to Ireland, it is a rare bird indeed. While it is theoretically possible to run even the 320hp tractive unit at 41 tonnes most UK operators would only entertain it at a much lighter gross weight. The 360hp model is again less powerful than most operators' ideal. That said, our reports suggest the F Mir o has been fuelefficient and reliable, while the FM cab is a welcome replacement for the FL, providing greater comfort and living space even in the standard sleeper. The engine apart, in most respects the FMro is very similar to the much more popular FM 12. New, these trucks can lose 50% from their value over the first two years, which is clearly unacceptable—but as used vehicles they then become attractive. The operators we spoke to are satisfied with the FMio's performance and we expect them to continue operating them for some time, which means they will be hard to find on the used truck market.
