LA Elwell knocks out steel sections and makes its own steel rolls. Steve Harding, the company's joint MD, says A can cost £20,000 to make 20 pairs of rolls a high cost, but it's cheaper to perform the job in-house than get them made by another company. This work is carried out by toolmaker brothers Ian and Steve Clifton.
Elwell's manufacturing expertise makes the job more convenient as rolls can be made exactly to order, on time, without having to bring them in. A CNC machine-filled room has been set aside exclusively for fashioning these rolls.
