I note from your article "Give carriers a chance — FTA" (CM, November 18) that the FTA has recommended that the Post Office should introduce distance-related pricing — on the grounds that this will reduce our competitiveness in the small parcels market!
The ETA should know that we already have distance-related pricing in the form of County Parcels, Nightrider and Contract Local Delivery services. These are all relatively new services introduced in the last couple of years as part of an aggressive drive to meet customers' needs on a competitive basis.
If our assessment of market requirements indicates that a further move towards distance-related pricing would be in the interests of our customers, and would be financially worthwhile, we shall act accordingly; we do not propose to formulate our marketing policies on the basis of our competitors' requirements.
