INSPECTING and testing transport equipment should be 'done by only one government department — and that should be the Department of Transport, says the Freight Transport Association.
Commenting on proposals to involve the Health and Safety Executive in testing lifting gear for vehicles, the FTA says there are practical difficulties in the necessary inspection and certificate systems.
It has pointed out that with vehicles often being away from base for long periods, UK operators have little chance to check tackle before accepting a load.
