• A new £90,003 one-way traffic scheme for the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne will include bus only lanes, announced Mr. Derek Bradshaw, city engineer, last Friday. Buses will use the lanes to travel against the flow of traffic when the scheme is introduced in October, but increased mileage will be involved. The total of 14m miles a year operated by the city's buses will be increased by 172,000 miles; journeys, however, should be speeded-up.
Mr. Bradshaw said present congestion made schedules impossible to keep and buses sometimes took 45 minutes to cover a journey which should take five minutes.
