• A deputation from the Passenger Vehicle Operators' Association, together with a representative of the Northern Road Transport Owners' Association, met Mr. Stephen Swingler, Minister of State for Transport, on Friday, to discuss proposals contained in the Transport Bill.
The Associations reiterated their objections to Passenger Transport Authorities in the form proposed. They expressed particular concern over the provisions for compensation and the future of employees displaced by PTAs taking over passenger services. Among other practical and financial matters discussed were safeguards for private-hire operators.
Mr. Swingler undertook to consider the points put forward and discuss them with Mrs. Castle. Bill, but our discussions were helpful and Mr. Swingler seemed to sympathize with many of the points we made. We hope that, as a result, certain practical changes will be made. We have not yet discussed the controversial proposals for reducing drivers' hours, but this will be done."
