UP TO six of the 28 drivers at the Stonehaven depot of the Northern Scottish bus garage could be declared redundant towards the end of this year, as the result of a deal struck between Grampian Regional Council and British Rail.
The council and BR are jointly spending £150,000 on reopening Portlethen station closed since 1956, mainly to provide a rush-hour commuter service from Portlethen.
As part of a mutual arrangement, BR has offered to provide a free Portlethen-Stonehaven return service for a minimum period of one year, for secondary school pupils in the area who attend Mackie Academy.
At the moment, about 250 pupils are bussed by Northern Scottish to and from school at a cost of around £62,000 a year.
