• Commercial vehicle rental giant Salford Van Hire has to pay .C24,000 in fines, back duty and prosecution costs for hiring out untaxed and unregistered vehicles and then registering them with the following year's plates.
The Sherborne Street, Manchester-based firm, which has about 5,000 vehicles, pleaded guilty to 54 offences of using vehicles without an excise licence when it appeared before Leigh. Lanes magistrates.
Prosecuting, Jason Coulter said the case was the culmination of a lengthy and detailed investigation by Greater Manchester police.
