• Another Yorkshire colliery looks set to close, deepening the problems facing coal hauliers in the region.
UK Coal says trade union leaders have failed to come up with a viable plan to prevent losses at Maltby Colfiery, near Rotherham, which produces 1.6m tonnes a year.
A company spokesman says a final decision about Maltby's fate will be made soon, following talks with the government. However, Harworth Colliery near Doncaster, whose future was also in doubt, appears to have been granted a reprieve. In November last year, Hargreaves Transport Services, based near Durham, warned that any change to the amount of coal coming out of the two collieries would have a dramatic effect on the business ( CM21-27 November).
UK Coal has already closed the Prince of Wales Colliery at Pontefract, and is due to close four more at Selby by 2004.
