• WHS Transport Ltd, part of the W. H. Smith group of companies, took a second stride this week into the parcels carrying sector with the opening of a new depot in Liverpool. Recently, the company acquired Townsend Carriers, thus adding 135 vehicles to its 600-strong fleet (CM June 11).
One-hundred and twenty-five vehicles will operate from the new premises at Redfern Street, Bankhall, which were declared open by the Lord Mayor of Liverpool. The depot will offer national and local parcels services, express delivery of full and part-loads, and van hire to trade customers. Hgv will be available on full maintenance contracts and maintenance of fleets can be undertaken on a contract basis.
The new depot will feed packages into the WHS Transport national parcels system so that packages originating on Mersyside can be accepted for any UK destination. The depot operates in three main fields: (1) newspaper delivery; (2) operation of a parcels system for trade customers; and (3) operation of a limited number of hgv on full and part-load basis—regular destinations will include Felixstowe, Glasgow. London and Norwich.
Both day and night services are provided.
