• Details have been released by Smith's Electric Vehicles Ltd, Team Valley Trading Estate, Gateshead-on-Tyne, NEB 1YT, of a new design of a covered, easily loaded electric dairy vehicle. Designed in conjunction with Mr G. E. Pearson, director (transport) of the Express Dairy Co (London) Ltd, South Ruislip, the model is known as the Caban and is based on the company's Cabac range of electrics. Although it will be some time before Caban electrics can be purchased by operators, Cabac milk vehicles can be modified to incorporate Caban features.
According to Smith's technicians, the demand for an improved standard of hygiene will eventually eliminate the use of open dairy vehicles for the carriage of milk and milk products, and they point out that it is now common practice to carry cream, yoghurt, butter, eggs, chickens and other foodstuffs in addition to milk and that such goods should be delivered in a cold, fresh condition.
The Caban is a walk-through vehicle and is equipped with a milk-carrying trolley that can be loaded and unloaded in about 5min and provides a corresponding saving in the roundsman's working time. Cupboards can be fitted in the vehicle for the carriage of other goods as required.
