Geoff Hallam has always been one of those cheery, successful transport men who can make everyone else smile no matter how poor the circumstances. Just at the moment Geoff's in need of a bit of cheering himself.
Last week he was telling me how depressed he had been when he had to serve redundancy notices on about 200 employees. "Some of them started with me 28 years ago," he said. Five of Geoff's Humber McVeigh depots have been closed, another two are merging and half the 500-vehicle fleet is off the road. As a result of the "sackings" Geoff spent 13 weeks in hospital.
All very depressing, but there's a light at the end of the tunnel. "Hallam's not beaten yet," he told me—not in the old light-hearted way but with a note of grim determination. "I'll be back, but not this year," he added.
