THE GLC's feasibility study on the proposed Neasden transfer terminal is complete. Not only is it recommended,
but there is a suggestion that eventually 10 such terminals might be located around London. The picture looks good except for one aspect. The report shows that the major snag, as in most things these days, is finance.
Denis Healey is expected to announce any day now a severe cut in public spending so the GLC is being under
standably both cautious and thrifty in the matter. This is no reason, however, why the proposals should not be implemented.
Developers have, in the past, been all too willing to produce multi-storey blocks of offices and warehouses without any guarantee of finding tenants. There should be no short age of tenants for the new freight terminals especially since local governments throughout the country are still making determined efforts to keep heavy goods vehicles away from town centres. The proposed complexes present opportunities to fuel suppliers, vehicle repairers, caterers and, of course, warehousemen.
The freight transfer terminal is the next logical, some might even say urgent, step in the development of our national distribution pattern. Those who get in early will reap the rewards.
