• Two 100-year-old small haulage operations have closed with the loss of almost 30 drivers' jobs after they lost British Steel contracts.
Barry Lindfield, of Wirralbased L Lindfield & Sons, which employed 18 drivers, says the rates offered for distri bution work with incoming contractor Faber Prest are lower than he was receiving in 1991.
Buckley-based J Shone & Sons closed on 30 June, making nine drivers redundant. Mike Shone says: "The rates were 30% down on what we had been receiving from BS."
