One trend that is taking off is the Volvo "tridem" chassis, which is proving popular for under-reach operations. The Boniface design target for axle loadings on under-reach lifts is to carry 8,000kg per axle at a reach of 4.5m and the Volvo makes this easier to achieve. Each vehicle's design is the work of an inhouse CAD team, but the crucial axle weights are also recalculated by external specialists. In many ways, the recovery industry is a paragon of innovation, constantly looking for ways to improve customer service and profitability. Every operator's way is best for them, though, so virtually every recovery vehicle is custom built. While helping keep the Boniface workshops full, this doesn't always make for efficient production. We saw a Volvo destined for France, which incorporated a moulded GAP body construction offering significant advantages including easy manufacturing repeatability once the moulds are made. However, only a small number of buyers would accept an off-the-peg body.
Whether or not the future does bring increased standardisation or the market continues to demand custom builds, Boniface looks well placed to meet the challenges.
