• Heavy goods vehicle operators convicted of overloading by magistrates in the Yorkshire traffic area will in future be called before the Licensing Authority under Section 69 almost as a matter of course, a spokesman for the Yorkshire LA told CM last week.
He said LAs in general had now "toughened up" in cases of overloading following a letter from the Minister for Transport Industries to the LAs in November last year which suggested that overloading offenders were dealt with far too leniently. One case highlighting the growing concern about overloading in Yorkshire involved nine operators — mainly owner-drivers — convicted of overloading at Bradford City magistrates' Court on January 26 (CM February 2). They are now to appear before the Yorkshire LA under Section 69 in Leeds on March 30 when the LA will consider whether, in view of the convictions, he has been given grounds to suspend, curtail or entirely revoke their 0 Licences.
