As I see it, a tachograph is a fairly expensive instrument requiring specialized fitting facilities. The tachographs today do not measure up to the final EEC specification, but a vehicle equipped with a current tachograph will be allowed to operate without change for some two years beyond the otherwise final date offttting.
It also seems to me that there will still be considerable trade union resistance to the instruments. On the other hand, commercial interests are hard at work declaring the need for early fitting, claiming that if operators delay this task, the commercial enterprises offering this facility will not be able to cope and vehicles will be out of service while waiting in the queue.
I am anxious not to delay the situation but be I fit now how long will the instrument meet the law?
