cad safety minister Steven Norris is a typical, middle-aged, overweight Conservative and not a lycra freak by any stretch (Ouch! Ed) of the imagination.
That's not just my opinion but that of the minister himself who rattled off a list of his physical shortcomings at a London reception to launch a bid for Millennium Commission funding for 2,000 miles of a 5,000 miles national cycle network. On the Continent 15% of journeys are made by bike compared with just 2% in Britain.
The £37m bid from cycle path charity Sustrans is supported by Norris, who says he hopes to try out some of the new rides himself. A timely thought since "On your bike" could well be the advice offered by the public to several other ministers.
