With six weeks to go until the introduction of digital tachographs, we'll be offering weekly bulletins to help you prepare for the new technology, courtesy of the FTA.
Knowing when you will be faced with a vehicle fitted with a digital tachograph must be the first step in your preparations.
It has been legally permissible to fit and use digital tachographs since 5 August 2005, and vehicle manufacturers have been allowed to offer them as an optional equipment in new vehicles since September 2005.
Expect to come under greater pressure to accept new vehicles fitted with dig tal tachographs as the date for mandatory fitment draws closer.
You should:
• Think about and plan your organisation's vehicle-procurement policy accordingly.
• Make sure you clearly specify your requirement for either analogue or digital equipment for any new vehicles on order for delivery between now and the mandatory introduction date. It may be possible to pre-register vehicles to ensure they can be legally fitted with analogue equipment; speak to your manufacturer or dealer for more details.
• Think about any hire vehicles you will be using in the future Speak to your suppliers of hired vehicles to find out how long they will be able to guarantee to provide you with vehicles fitted with analogue equipment. If you will be relying on them to provide you with these vehicles, plan to reassess the situation on a regular basis. eT3
