molybdenum-disulphide-based lubricant additive in the diesel engines of a number of light-delivery vehicles. Could you give any advice on this proposal?
AIt is generally acknowledged that a
molybdenum-disulphide additive is a valuable aid to lubrication in the case of the valve gear of an engine operating continuously at a high speed because it improves the shear properties of the oil. It is doubtful, however, whether this property has a practical advantage in the lubrication of a diesel, unless possibly the vehicle is regularly employed for high-speed runs on a motorway or the equivalent.
Whether molybdenum-disulphide prolongs the life of the bores and pistons of an engine and improves fuel consumption may be regarded as an "open question". As indicated in the reference to valve gear. it undoubtedly has anti-friction properties. And it is pertinent to quote the comment of a well-known research engineer made at a conference on lubrication some years ago. According to this engineer, "A little Molly does no one any harm".
