once again headed for-home in the Atego, and we were quickly reminded that the little Merc six-wheeler is an eminently driveable machine. Its roll stability and ride inspire confidence, as do its disc brakes and, once you get the revs up, its exhaust brake.
But in particular its well-balanced steering allows you to make confidently rapid progress even through tight corners and London's car-choked streets, empty or laden.
The six-speed box is generally well matched to the OM906LA engine and the splitter allows you to fine tune things nicely. Third gear is very flexible and for the unwary there's an over-revving warning buzzer, just in case you come down the box too soon. The seating position and noise levels are OK and forward visibility is just right for the urban jungle.
Second time around with the 2628B, we'll simply repeat what we said back in 2000: "It's a truck you could do a good day's work in."
