Vehicles are no longer plated in accordance with standard lists. Motor vehicles are normally plated when they are Type Approved and the certificate of conformity for the vehicle will show the plated weights. Following registration the Ministry plate will be issued, Trailers are plated from information supplied by the trailer manufacturer.
The requirement for the Vehicle Inspectorate to publish standard lists was removed from the regulations in 1997 because, although they were useful when the plating scheme started in 1968, they had outlived their usefulness when Type Approval was introduced.
Downplating is now permitted for VED purposes without alteration to the vehicle. This was introduced at the time of the Budget in 1998. Appfications for downplating should be made on form VTG10 and in most cases where no alteration is made an inspection will not be necessary.
