• Hauliers will be able to reduce their empty mileage or subcontract excess loads by accessing Europe's first Internet freight exchange, Eurotrans. Subscribing transport operators and forwarding agents register offers of work in the system, or use it to bid for return loads. Eurotrans is already handling 500 freight contracts a day. A spokesman for Eurotrans says the system will encourage greater efficiency, adding: "In Europe, 30% of trucks run empty, or are only part used." The UK launch of Eurotrans comes as Road Haulage Association director general Steven Norris is busy telling members they must pool information to keep up with big operators.
At the RHA conference in Malta last week, he reminded small hauliers that they have a combined buying power greater than any haulage giant. Among the services the RHA is looking at introducing is a fuel card to pass on savings through bulk buying.
Eurotrans is available to subscribers or via internet terminals at 1 5 Fina service stations throughout Europe. Contact: 00 32 23 95 6538.
