• VerityPerkins Eagle TxSi liquid-cooled, lean-burn, spark-ignition engine, turbocharged and charge-cooled with drive-by-wire electronic control.
Cylinders: Six, in line. Capacity: 12.17 litres. Compression ratio: 12:1. Maximum power: 320hp (239kW) at 1,900rpm. Maximum torque: 1,1441bft (1,551Nm) at 1,050rpm. Fuel system WPC° electronically controlled mixing, with air and fuel mass flow meters. Ignition: Heavy-duty electronically controlled system, one coil per cylinder.
The truck engine was developed from a stationary model, and it incorporates corrosion-resistant aluminium bearings which can cope with "dirty" gas from waste sites—unnecessary with clean liquefied gas—but several features are different. The turbocharger is fitted with a wastegate for faster throttle response, and is liquid cooled to cope with high-temperature exhaust gases, especially at low revs. Extra-heavy-duty ignition coils are fitted, and the engine runs on a leanburn principle.
The exhaust is fitted with a Iwo-way catalyst: BOC/VarityPerkins are trying out a number of catalyst designs. Sam de Beaux is not keen on the vertical exhaust stack—"it looks a little bit Yorkie Bar"—but it is necessary to allow room for the catalyst. BOC is also experimenting with different gas-engine oils—Mobil and Castrol eral types—to see how they cope with automotive applications. A
