A HAULIER WHO was jailed for deliberately driving into two cyclists has cost his firm its licence.
Brian and Carl Baxter, trading as Brian Baxter & Sons Hauliers,of Market Weighton,North Yorkshire, had been called before the North Eastern Traffic Commissioner Tom Macartney.
The TC heard that Carl Baxter, who was also the firm's transport manager, had been sentenced to two years' imprisonment in March at Hull Crown Court after pleading guilty to two offences of causing grievous bodily harm and one of dangerous driving.
The court had heard that he had passed too close to a cyclist and the cyclist shook his fist. Baxter stopped his Range Rover and reversed it into the cyclist and his daughter (CM4 September).
TheTC decided that Carl Baxter had lost his repute and it would not be regained for two years from the date of sentencing. But if a fresh licence application was made by the remaining partners it was likely to be considered favourably.
The TC was told that as a result of the publicity surrounding the court case the company lost a £500,000 contract with Rugby Cement and it was forced to sell its specialised tank trailers at a loss of £30,000. It now worked for Norfolk Line and one other customer.
