A SERIOUS FIRE in the Channel Tunnel meant the number of trucks using the route in the three months to the end of September fell by 14% The number of trucks using Eurotunnel dropped to 296,054, compared to 343,919 that used the link between Britain and France in the same period last year.
However, the overall number of trucks using the Channel "flannel in 2008 has risen slightly, despite the tire on September 11, which saw 27 HGNis burnt out and 29 drivers and co-drivers escape down the service tunnel.
The number of trucks using the service this year continues to grow after a prolonged period without a full service in the wake of the fire. In the nine months leading up to 30 September, 1.053,477 trucks have used Eurotunnel services, compared to 1,051,341 using the tunnel in the same period in 2007.
