THERE WAS a touch of mag in the air at the finals of th year's CMI,DoY competitio last Sunday, as the sun carr out for once, shining bright] on the new titleholder — Re Withers.
In his fourth attempt carrying off the tith Roy, 40, finally won throug by beating his nearest rival E 32 penalty points. Runner-up was David Clare, 30, a driver for the Post ffice in Leeds.
Triumphant Roy, who orks for Midlands BRS from he Birmingham Distribution epot, received a resounding ound of applause when he as named winner.

And among the many wards he receives, is the ichelin European Study ward 1977, worth an estiated £1,000.
It means the chance of a trip o France to see how the rench organise their transort operations, as well as isiting the Berliet factory at yons, an operator in the I. hone Valley and the Michelin est Centre at Ladoux.
The tour also includes a trip o Paris and the opportunity or the champion to drive rench lorries on French roads.
That, plus the many other awards that he received as winner (listed in the full report on pages 32-36) left Roy almost speechless with delight.
He did, however, manage to tell CM he felt as if he was floating on cloud nine and would be celebrating with his wife, Pauline, and friends at a restaurant later in the evening.
superb display
In a superb display of iriving skill and knowledge of :he road, Roy chalked up nil Denalty points in the Highway :ode test, the road route test and two of the four manDeuvring tests. Low penalty points were given in the last .wo manoeuvring tests.
Roy told CM: "When I first itarted, back in the regional ;ompetition earlier in the year, didn't really think 1 had much )f a chance.
"It was only when it got to ibout two o'clock this afterloon I thought I might be in vith a chance."
The hardest part of all the ests for Roy was, he said, iaving to give the written ,nswers to the Highway Code elected questions "I knew the answers but found it difficult explaining them on paper."
Giant success
For BRS generally, the day proved to be a giant success. Out of the 311 drivers competing at Bramcote, 44 of them were from one BRS region or another.
And again, out of the eight finalists, five were driving for BRS.
