have yet to have the final rubber stamp from the EU, Daf has decided to grasp the nettle and launch engines which conform to the anticipated requirements. All the 9.2 and 12.6-litre engines in Oafs 75CF, 85CF and 95XF models have new Euro-3 equivalents. They share the UPEC system with the 530 engine, but not the high-strength cylinder block.
Over the past 18 months Oaf's Eurn-3 engines have covered more than 15 million kilometres in 110 vehicles. As a result, it claims the fuel consumption penalty should be no more than 2%, but also reckons that improved torque will permit the use of taller final drive ratios to recover much of the loss.
Three options THE DAF EURO-3 ENGINE RANGE packages are avail able; combined cruise control and driver' controlled speed hold; PTO control and external engine speed control; or both of those together. The electronics have allowed Daf to lower the cost of cruise control to £110, and the company might well decide to make it standard.
The Eum-3 engines, which are scheduled to go into production in early November, will sell for a premium of £2,300.
