THE GERMAN government is seeking £3.3m compensation from Toll Collect for the delay to the launch of its motorway truck toll system.
Transport Minister Manfred Stolpe says the damages are for loss of income and breach of contract following a series of delays to the launch of the system, including the recall of 20,000 onboard units (OBUs) because of a software fault (CMS January).
Toll Collect, the consortium comprising DaimlerChrysler, Deutsche Telekom and French tolling operator Cofiroute, hopes to have the system up and running on 1 January 2005 — almost 18 months after the planned launch of August 2003.
It recently staged a successful two-week trial involving 41 trucks from 25 companies from Germany and the Benelux countries.
A Toll Collect spokesman declined to comment on the claim.
