After a 10-month relationship, CM and Toyota's Hilux pickup have
parted company. But will it be missed? Julian Manes reports.
Have you ever been dumped'? Remember the feeling? The CM test team is experiencing the same emotions as it mourns the loss of a reliable partner that turned a few heads as well.Yes readers, our Hilux pickup has finally been called back to Toyotaland and we're still trying to move on, such was our respect for this rugged 4x4. But like all discerning partners it gave off an air of refinement as well, displaying exceptional manners and a relaxed demeanour.

displaying a decent spread of torque and refined cruising manners, even at high speeds, though it could have done with a touch more power when fully laden (see panel). Like all refined partners it also drank sparingly —38.8mpg on the last fuel run — saving us plenty of money to lavish it with treats, like the occasional vacuum.
And, while looks are only skin deep, the Hilux certainly did attract attention (especially And, though we liked to be alone most of the time, accommodation for five people was easily achieved when required.
Of course no one's perfect and the Hilux, like its Con temporaries. does not appreciate being rushed through corners or powered off the line, when the rear wheels will scream in protest. But as a long-term companion GU53 RIVIZ proved to be well above the average for the class. She will be missed. •
