LEICESTER-BASED temperature controlled operator Samworth Brothers Distribution has been given the green light to open a new operating centre in Penrith for 25 vehicles and 25 trailers The chilled transport arm of the firm that makes Ginsters pasties was unable to comment further on the authorisation; a spokeswoman says negotiations are stilt continuing.
It already holds licences to run 120 vehicles out of various operating centres across the country and its fleet covers over 14 million miles every year. It already has a licence for 10 vehicles at a site in Penrith.
In May the company announced that it was testing its first Gray & Adams Eco-Aer trailer fitted with side-skirts. It is using a high-mileage route between Leicester and Penrith to trial the trailer.
The firm's fleet manager, Graeme Hawker, said the trial was part of a raft of developments to help reduce running costs, which also included driver training, tyre pressure checks and vehicle specification.
