WITH the object of ascertaining the W best means for replacing the pneumatic tyre on trailers and carts used in agriculture, preliminary trials were held last week at which were present representatives of the Ministries of War Transport and Supply, and of the local County War Agricultural Executive Committee. They were organized by the Joint Standing Committee of the Agricultural Engineers Association and conducted on ground that included ploughed clay land in very • wet condition.
A number of steel wheels and wheels of wood construction were tried, but the best results under the worst conditions, according to dynamometer readings, were obtained with track units, the Roadless and the Rotaped performing in a notably satisfactory manner, The land on which these tests were carried out was common land, which had been ploughed up, and from which many trees had been removed, with the result that its surface was extremely rough and irregular.
