ALTHOUGH the dreaded Red Caps are generally associated with military offences, Mike Beale, Carryfast's Southampton operations manager, escapes this social stigma. As a staff sergeant in 253 Provost Company, Royal Military Police (Volunteers) — one of three Terriers in the branch — his role is that of traffic controller.
He was much in evidence in an exercise on Salisbury Plain for which Carryfast provided a tractor and trailer for use as "special" and "priority" loads under escort. It was driven by Mick Officer, a Carryfast night truck driver who, despite his name, is a sergeant in 233 Company, Royal Corps of Transport.
Dale Hale, a corporal in 233 company, is the third Carryfast Southampton Terrier. They have to parade once a week and complete 12 individual days and two week's army camp training each year, so their transport work spills over freely into their leisure time.
