• Volvo has revealed Its Euro-2 engine variants of the six-litre engine used in the FL6 range, as speculation mounts that the company has signed a deal with Perkins to supply engines for the forthcoming Volvo 7.5-tonner. Top power rating for the six-litre engine is a nominal 230hp, on a par with Volvo's seven-litre engine.
The 230hp option will be offered in both the FL614 and FL618 14-tonne and 17-tonne 4x2 chas
sis—Volvo expects the extra power to appeal to fire and rescue services. The 210hp and 180hp variants will also be available in Euro-2 guise.
Engine modifications include a new cylinder head, fuel injectors and injection pipes. Injection pressure is higher; a wastegate turbocharger has been introduced to limit boost pressure.
No date has been set for the launch of the Volvo 7.5-tonner, but it could be this year.
To remain competitive Volvo is expected to opt for the four-cylinder, four-litre Pbaser currently rated at 135hp. In Euro-2 form this is likely to be raised, making the Volvo competitive with four-cylinder 7.5tanners from Iveco Ford, MAN and Mercedes-Benz, which offer up to 160hp. Volvo will probably also offer the D6A Euro-2 six-litre engine for operators who prefer six-cylinder engines.
