Relations between supermarket Tesco and the T&G union are heading for the rocks with a strike vote on the cards. Guy Sheppard reports.
A DISPUTE OVER changes to terms and conditions for more than 150 Tesco drivers in Scotland is escalating, with the first step being taken towards strike action.
Drivers at Livingston claim they will be worse off when their site is replaced by a £75m depot next July.
They are being balloted on whether they want to vote on industrial action following a mass meeting earlier this month where the Transport & General Workers Union (T&G) described their mood as"furious".
One driver estimates that the proposed changes will cut average annual earnings (currently up to £30.000) by about £5,000.
This is not about saving money or getting things running more efficiently because we already do a very efficient job." He adds that Tesco justifies its stance because research has shown the drivers' earnings are among the top 10% for distribution jobs locally — he claims the company feels this too high.
The proposed changes include reducing the time frame in which night-time premiums are paid and linking holiday pay to basic rather than average earnings.
Tesco's 85 drivers based at Dundee are also conducting a ballot on whether to pursue industrial action.Their depot will close when the one in Livingston opens and the severance package offered by the company is said by drivers to be inadequate.
A spokeswoman for Tesco says it is still discussing the changes at both sites with union leaders but declined to comment further.
