THE GERMAN haulage industry is to take part in a nationwide trial of extra-large semi-trailers Operators will be allowed to run 300 Kogel "Big-Maxx" semitrailers which, at 14.9m, are 1.3m longer than the longest existing German semis, offering an extra 10m3ofload volume. However, the German government is sticking to its 40-tonne weight limit:I-he semitrailers cost about €5,000 more than conventional models.
The KOgel trial is scheduled to last for six years. The artics being evaluated are 17.8m long, one metre shorter than the longest drawbar rigs.
Meanwhile Dutch operators believe their trial of 25.25m trucks,
due to end in the autumn, will lead to their permanent adoption.
In anticipation of this, a Dutch driving school Blom Transportopleidingen, of Etten-Leur, near Breda has acquired its own 25.25m drawbar rig.
The German state of Neidersachsen has also launched a trial of 25.25m drawbars (CM 20 July).
