The Western Traffic Area stretches from Cornwall in the West to Oxfordshire and Hampshire in the East, including large urban areas such as Bristol, Southampton and Plymouth.
The latest Traffic Commissioner's Report (2008-09) recorded 13,872 goods vehicle 0-licences in issue. This is down from 14,210 the year before. These licences specify 52,730 vehicles in all, the third-highest number of all the traffic areas in the UK.
There were 859 applications for new 0-licences processed in 2008-09, although 27 were refused and 43 were withdrawn.
In the 2008-09 period, there were 131 public inquiries in the Western Area, 51 licence revocations and 20 suspensions, with curtailments imposed in 21 cases.
