A STANDARD specification for vehicles sold in Europe — code-named Eurospec — was launched by British Leyland at the opening of the Amsterdam commercial vehicle show last Friday.
Leyland claims that Eurospec will enable the company to rationalise production for Europe and improve delivery times. The standardisation of components is aimed at making parts stocking easier.
There are seven features in the Eurospec programme which will apply to all models offered in Europe. In future, vehicles will be capable of: 1) Achieving a road speed of 100km/h (62mph) under standard body conditions.
2) Restarting laden on a 20 per cent gradient.
3) Climbing a 25 per cent gradient with a full load at a reasonable speed.
4) Starting at temperatures down. to —20°C (4°F).
5) Being effectively cooled at ambient temperatures of up to 37°C (99°F).
6) An average day's work on one tank of fuel.
7)Providing drivers with an efficient but comfortable working environment.
Leyland claims that these requirements have been achieved on all the vehicles being shown at Amsterdam.
