rowsing through his local paper recently— the Mitcham and Morden Guardian—the Hawk came upon an impassioned plea from a reader seeking information on a now defunct South London Haulage firm.
Peter Kilden of Bromley wants photographs of lorries run by WM Truckel which ran its operation from a depot opposite Battersea Power Station until selling out to St Albans Sand and Gravel in the late seventies.
Peter's father worked as a driver for Truckel for several years: "Every time I was on a school holiday I went with my Dad all around London," he writes. "I was really in my element. Over many years now I have bought many books and magazines on London's lorries and have never come across a photo of Truckel's lorries.
"I find this particularly frustrating as the company started with horse and carts, went through two world wars, and ended up operating more than 200 lorries."
Peter adds he "would be delighted to hear from anyone who may be able to help me." Anyone who can help should send a copy of their picture care of the Hawk and I'll print the best.
