Harrison goes into liquidation

• by Sally Nash Among the first business casualties of the new year is Harrison Logistics, which has gone into liquidation along with its sister firm, Harrison Logistics Scotland.
The two companies, which turned over £15m between them last year, are involved in a range of transport services including freight forwarding, air freight, groupage and warehousing. Ian Rankin and David Thornhill from PricewaterhouseCoopers in Manchester have been appointed joint liquidators; creditors' meetings have been arranged for January 22-23.
Among angry creditors is Steve Hardy, who is owed .£2,771 for groupage deliveries from October last year. "I wouldn't have known anything about the situation if I hadn't rung up to ask about more work," he says, "We'll be lucky to get 40p in the pound." Harrison's main offices in England are in Liverpool, Manchester, Tamworth, Birmingham, Southampton and Tilbury. Harrison Logistics Scotland works out of a site at Grangemouth.
About a third of the workforce of 85 have been retained while the business is wound down over the next few weeks.
Thornhill says he does not yet have "an accurate feel" for the amount of money owed or the reason for the liquidation.
"The main priority at the moment has to be making sure that cargo ends up where it should do," he points out.
Harrison was set up two years ago from the previously separate businesses of Gardner Freight International; Henry Tyrer & Co; Martin Rancher (UK); Key Shipping Services; Thomas Tweddle & Co; and Prentice Shipping.
