• Van hire companies in the West Midlands have been told to clean up their act after trading standards officers found an alarming proportion of hire vehicles to be in a dangerous condition.
When undercover trading standards officers from Coventry City Council hired six vans from small independent hire companies they found that only one met safety standards.
Four of the vans were found to be unroadworthy and their owners were issued with prohibition notices: one had serious steering and brake faults; others had defective seatbelts, lights and tyres.
