• A new website designed to aid the workplace health and safety of new and expectant mothers has been launched by the HSE. For information see www.hse.gov.uk/mothers.
Every year around 350,000 women continue to work during their pregnancy, and 69% of them return to work soon after giving birth, says the HSE. Employers have a legal responsibility to assess risks to their safety, it points out.
Many of them may be working with computers, and the HSE has just produced a new edition of its booklet Working with VDUs. Stress, visual discomfort, and aches and pains in the hands, wrists, arms, or shoulders are just some of the problems that can arise if VDUs are used incorrectly, it says.
