• Food and drink wholesaler and distributor Palmer and Harvey McLane has become the first winner of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) award for managing occupational road risk.
Measures taken by the company, which runs 900 trucks, include the introduction of a bonus scheme for drivers who don't have accidents. Driver training has been targeted to fit the needs of individual branches, and the firm's biggest depots all employ driver assessors.
in just over three years we have almost halved our accident rate, and dramatically reduced costs," says group transport manager, Ray Ward. One consequence of cutting the number of accidents is that the company has been able to self-insure to a higher degree than previously.
Palmer and Harvey isn't the only company to be given a ROSPA accolade. All the sites operated by Exel on behalf of supermarket chain Safeway in the UK have received RoSPA occupational health and safety awards.
