One look at our group photographs will show that the Mitsubishi's cab has dimensions a clear class larger than the other eastern products. However, apart from the extra width, the Canter fails to capitalise on its in-built advantages: both of our six-foot testers reported some accommodation issues.
Although its three-litre engine has the highest torque output, it doesn't come into play soon enough to help initial take-off. Progress is not helped by some unhelpfully spaced gear ratios, either. Maybe this baby of the range could use the six-speed box fitted to its bigger brethren.
Comments that it felt the most truck-like of this group were not necessarily compliments. While it's undeniably tough, it may be just too lacking in the civilised niceties in this company. Whatever the reason, every one of our test team placed the Canter at the bottom of their lists.
