THE first of three bonneted Mack R685RT tractive units has entered service with R. J. Norman Ltd of Barnsley.
With a design gew of 38 tonnes (37.4 tons) this first vehicle is coupled to a Nevilles Ratesaver tipping trailer and will be used on long haul for scrap metal, coal and aggregates.
A six-cylinder Maxidyne engine provides the power for the Mack, producing a maximum of 178kW (239bhp) at 1700rpm. Maximum torque is 1242Nm (91611bft) at 1200rpm.
The five-speed transmission fitted to the Mack is said to be adequate for all the operator's requirements in terms of gradeability and speed. It was one of these Mack vehicles in R. J. Norman's colourswhich was refused entry to the Tipper Convention at Harrogate because its weren't RHA members.
However a quick cover up of the signwriting with Mack stickers regained the vehicle its position.
