THE FIRST presentation in another country of the new range of Soviet-built Karnas heavy commercials took place recently in Yugoslavia. Shown by the Soviet Foreign Trade organisation the new vehicles are fitted with forward control all-steel tilt cabs and are powered by V-8 10.85-litre diesel engines developing 157kW /210bhp) at 2,600rpm. On the haulage models a 10speed + reverse splitter box is fitted. Although the cab is of fairly modern appearance the divided windscreen is not as deep as on most current western European trucks. The Kamas is a vital key to the modernisation of Russian haulage fleets and the 6x4 tractor unit is expected to be among the first to be seen in international operation by the Sovtransauto organisation. Other variants include a 4x2 16-tonner, a 6x4 drawbar trailer unit for a gtw of 27 tonnes and a 6x4 tipper on the same wheelbase as that of the artic tractor.
