This year's annual Institute of Waste Management exhibition looked like the largest to date—it attracted a huge array of vehicles and equipment with overseas manufacturers beginning to look increasingly important. Seddon Atkinson showed off its new EuroMover refuse collection vehicle, while parent group Iveco revealed the UK's first right-hand-drive New Daily van. Pressure is clearly growing on local authorities to step up their recycling activities, hence the rise in the number of recycling vehicles on display. It's a very busy show: book your space now for the millennium year.

Photography by Peter Cramer. • Anglesey-hased Face Mllnicipal Vehicles showed how to overcome traction problems on landfill sites with a civvy version of its DROPS-related tank track system. Built for use with any suitably equipped 5x4 or 8x4 chassis, the TrackRack device with its hydraulically assisted turntable and Boughton hooklift can pick up a spool with 55m of 60-tonne-rated flexible metal track, lay it dawn and then retrieve it. Several systems have been bought by the defence ministries in Norway and Singapore; our own Royal Engineers are said to be keen but may be short of funds just now. • Having launched the EuroMover earlier this year, Seddon Atkinson gave the annual IWM gathering its first real taste of the Oldham-built Iveco Cursor B municipal range. On show was a 300hp M26.300F rear-steer 6x2 with a low-height four-man cab, 5.45m OAS and Incomoi 21m3 Pusher 2000 refuse body. With a 200-litre fuel tank the bare chassis gives 18,191kg of body/payload allowance. Seddon's 4x2 M18.245F version with its three-man cab appeared for the first time. It is now with Will Engineering in Sheffield being fitted with a kerbside collection recycling body.
M Mercedes had its entire Vito-to-Actros CV range an show for the first time including the latest variant, a 4x4 1317A Atego. Shown here with an MTE drop-side tipper body, the 170hp 13.5-tenner has a six-speed synchro gearbox, transfer box and permanent front-wheel drive with differential and Inter-axle locks. The lighter (10.5-tonne) 10174 is available on a 3.26m wheelbase; the 1317A comes on 3,26m and 3.56m axle spreads. Body/payloads range from the 10174's 6,005kg to the longest 13174's 8,855kg, • Interest In rear-steer 6x2 rigids is rot confined to the breweries, as was shown by Biffa Waste's Iveco with its Mactift recycler. The show vehicle was one of five for Biffa Waste. It features a 30m3 triple-compartment body with bin lifts to the side and rear, each with its own PM On Board weighing cell. To accommodate the full-width
drive axle, Mactift stretched the body to 6.8m. Payload is around 11 tonnes at 25 tonnes GVW.
• Ever mindful of the municipal market's importance, Iveco UK displayed the first right-hand-drive example of its new Daily City Truck to reach the UK. Launched in Spain (CM 20-26 May), the 3.5-tonne S-Class Paignton example with full-height side and 2700 opening rear doors demonstrated superb access to its vast, 1.9m-high interior. Importantly, the show model had the more powerful123hp /290Nm common-railinjection engine option which, when started up from cold on the stand, sounded extremely quiet. New Dailys are expected to become available in the UK by September following the official UK launch.
• Bristol-based Hemmings' new Multilift Foden 6x4 hook-loader rigid and Truckmate drawbar trailer are designed to load and haul containers at 41 tonnes GVW. The Foden 26-tanner is powered by a 380hp Caterpillar engine; its 19.2-tonne triaxle trailer runs on eight-stud 285/70R 19.5in single tyres and 6.3-tonne Hendrickson low-loader axles. The front pair are bowed to let the 45° tilted box beam towbar past on full retraction when moving containers over the rear. Truckmate has built similar drawbar trailers that help shift 26.5 tonnes of bricks or blocks at 41 tonnes GCW; the design can go to 44 tonnes for intermodal applications.
• Better known for road sweeping, Cleckheaton-based Angus Heron has now turned to drain clearance work with the acquisition of a deep sewer jet/vac combination unit. It's capable of pumping water at up to 57gal/min and sucking at depths of 10Crft (33m). Valleley Engineering built the specialist 3,250ga1 tanker unit onto a Pet-Reg Mercedes Actros 2627 6x4 rigid, adding the Pratissoli triplex plunger jotter and Kaiser liquid-ring vacuum pump. Heron also has a four-wheeldrive satellite unit to go with it, capable of working in adjacent areas that are otherwise inaccessible. • Phoenix showed a new twin-wheeled 8,5-tonne hydraulic rear-steer axle which it believes has huge potential. The axle is said to comply with a recent EC directive covering braking and steering control on steer axles. This requires that if any part of the steer axle fails; it should fail safe to the straight-ahead position. The beam end enables the spring brake chambers to be fitted with twin 19.5in wheels and gives 22° of steering lock.
• UK Waste is acquiring this Marshall-cabbed ERF EU8 6x4 with its Jack Allen Swinglink rear-end loader, and an LHpowered EMS with its novel centre steer cab. Another EU8 6x2 appeared on the Faun stand, the user in this case being Knowsley MBC. The Marshall cab has received various changes including a redesigned A-post to improve visibility, electric door windows and an improved dash layout. The unconventional EM6 also appeared in 6x2 format with a Hendrickson mid-lift axle; one of these is about to start work in Ealing Borough Council's fleet. • Dunfermline-based Heil Europe bodied this MAN 26.293 rear-steer 6x2 with its forwardmounted, flat-floored cab. It is a popular concept for Continental single-crew operations. This is one of around 150 units bodied annually; it will be despatched via one of its European outlets to the end user in Holland. The Fife branch is an important contributor to the huge Chattanoogabased Heil Environmental group's annual turnover of $292m.

Hydraulic Equipment of Sudbury, all on Leyland Daf 4.5.150 3.25m-wheelbase chassis. The five-tonne extra-reach systems can extend 1.5m to 3.9m if required, and there's a folding bed extension to enable it to carry a pair of 5.0 yd3 skips.
• Prominent among PDE Geesink's exhibits was this GCTS side and rear-end loader with its Powerdrive static compaction system, demountable tailgate and swap-body system. When used as a complete system it enables container loads of waste to be shifted by road, rail or sea. Built for Grundon's evaluation, the container body is secured against the compaction head; the binlift system is mounted at the rear. When the body is full the lift-gear hydraulics are released and the three support legs are positioned so that the vehicle can be moved away for the bin to be replaced with an empty one.
• Always innovative, Scarab revealed yet another Torbay first: the Monic 4000 sweeper truck fitted with Omnidrive---a hydraulic drive system that eliminates the clutch and gearbox of this Isuzu NOR 7.5-tonner to give one-pedal control from standstill to 55mph. The wheelbase is cut to 2.8m and the gearbox is replaced with hydraulic pumps and motors for driveline and surface cleaning systems. The standard park brake is now on the rear axle. Sweeping speed is up to 15mph, and at 7.5 tonnes gross there's a 3.5 -tonne payload allowance in the 4.2m3 body. III Nottingham Trent University and First Hand Design have helped Whale Tankers come up with a gully emptier that can reduce the risk of repetitive strain and back injuries for its operatives. The new SmartWhale concept which, with a DTI SMART award, has cost some 2250,000 to develop, is based on a 14-tonne Leyland Daf 55.150. Safetyrelated features include a hydraulically powered grid lifter, "weightless" self-parking boom, easy-load hose tray, intelligent hydraulic controls and data logging. • Jack Allen's McNeilus Big Bite rear-loading Volvo FM7 eight-logger is the first of its type for Cleanaway. The chassis started life as a 6x4: Wheelbase Engineering added the extra Hendrickson axle with its 19.5in wheelsjust ahead of the double-drive bogie to help overcome the problem of overloading at the back when fully laden. The three-axle bogie rating rises to 24 tonnes within a 31.75-tonne GVW limit. Having ceased to fit Heil refuse bodies, J Allen now takes McNeilus (USA) body systems. McNe6s, which is part of the Oshkosh group, also makes concrete mixers.
Terberg showed off a new one or two-compartment skip container with bin lift, alongside this latest hook Holster demountable hook lift container. It's based on a Scania P114 340hp 8x4 with a Hiab 090 loading crane behind the cab which only leaves roam for the three-compartment body system normally used on a 26-tonner. The vehicle can handle bells, banks and skips of almost any size; the waste is weighed off by a WTI (US) unit with incab monitor and controls.
• LinkTip was at Torbay to launch its latest lightweight Gopher semi-automatic side-loading compactor bodies and Bantam compactors for 7.5-tonners. The Gopher range for 3.5-26-tonners offers manual or automatic loading; the show model was the Transit-mounted Gopher lwith a tapered rear end for emptying into skips or large body hoppers. Options include a high-pressurejetter and wandering suction hose. Link-firs Gopher 2 appeared on an Isuzu NPR 6.2-tonner with an Allison auto gearbox.
• Bexley, Worcs-based haulier S Walker has taken his eighth 13.6m walking-floor bulker from United Trailers: this latest 1160 (89m4) version is the first to have a full set of side opening doers, it's matched to a 400hp Scania P114 6x2; like Walker's other units it has Michelin XFA1 wide singles on the steer axle to cut down on tyre wear. Smooth trailer floor planks protect paper reels from expensive damage while a floating bulkhead cleans the floor and sides as the load shuffles out. DainderChrysler Discos axles give the rig disc brakes on all axles. The trailer is devoid of greasing points, so the driver has no excuse for not taking his wife shopping on a Saturday! • Dennis Eagle has redesigned its Phoenix refuse body system and boosted its capacity by 30%. The new Twin Pack 20, shown on an Elite 6x4 chassis, can recycle 6.7m3; its domestic waste capacity is 13.3m3. Dennis says that in tilt tests its lower centre of gravity helps it go to 30° in the worst-case conditions, and better than 39° laden when the larger hopper is raised. Dennis has also redesigned its XM model, replacing It with the Ex-Cell Range: 30 orders have been received to date, • Dee Warley's latest waste-transfer trailer with its Keith "running floor" arrived late at Torbay but created a lot of interest in a short time. The 126yd3 (96m3) trailer runs on DaimlerChrysler Discos axles and has the Nevis hydraulic sheet system, but the main focus was on the flexible, tapered body construction which originates from Star Trailers of Washington, USA, The container's made up of swaged vertical panels with inner fillets mounted on a high-tensile lower flange; the interior surface is smooth. The underside is only welded in part which leaves it free to flex,just like the tap cor ner sections up front. After the show the trailer was off to the Parkwood group in Sheffield to start a 12
month trial. Star's veteran designer Homer Waller says: 'We build 150 a year and they can last 20 years or more, on full maintenance," SUPER STEP
Leyland Daf's crewcab conversion by Don-Bur now has an extra door check strap and a neat air-operated bottom step. It works from the door light switch and features an integral red warning light.
