INSURANCE COMPANIES have hit back at accusations of apathy after their representative quit a government-backed initiative to reduce truck theft.
Brian Lee resigned from the Joint Action Group on Lorry Theft (JAGOLT) following claims that the Association of British Insurers (ABI) was not doing enough to help prevent crime (CM 10 June). The ABI says the work of insurers is under-estimated by some members of the group and points
to the work of the 'Thatcham research centre as one example of their collective action. Thatcham is partly funded by the insurance industry and conducts research into vehicle security systems.
"We do not want to get into a public slanging match with other members of the group and will continue to participate as fully as possible in the discussions," says an ABI spokesman.
He adds that Lee resigned because of pressure of work.
