MIDLAND EXPRESSWAY (MEL) has again refused to release figures for the number of trucks using the M6 Toll, claiming that after only six months it is too early to draw conclusions.
The toll operator's latest results show that the number of people using the route fell 4% in May to 42,682 vehicles — the first time it has failed to improve its monthly figures since January. MD Tom Fanning blames the slump on the two May bank holidays and says it is company policy
not to give a breakdown of vehicles using the road.
But the Freight Transport Association says that it cannot understand why MEL is reluctant to release truck figures.
An FTA spokesman says the next few weeks are important for the M6 Toll because of roadworks disrupting the M6: "It is sad that the high truck toll means that operators will use the road as a distress purchase rather than out of choice." It wants the toll cut from £11 to £5.
